red535 Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Bought my first Heritage. A '97 535, red with Lindy Fralin pups. It has been on consignment in a local shop for a couple of weeks and I finally could not wait any longer. Has a really clean jazz tone. Not my favorite sound. I like a liitle more gritty /bluesy sound. The reason I bought it is that it is the easiest to play guitar I have ever played. I thought my Epi Elitist Les Paul was easy, but this one puts it to shame. Nothing remarkable about it, I guess sometimes every thing is put together and it all works like a dream. I have not been playing long, about two years, and really do not have a particular style I like better than the others. I prefer to use my fingers over a pick. Using a Peavy Classic 30 and a Fender SuperTwin Reverb. Any way, just joined the community tonight . Love to hear comments.
mark555 Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 a big welcome to the best guitar forum there is. You have made a huge leap in quality from the epiphone to the Heritage, and I am pretty sure that eventually you will get another. When you can, post a pic of your guitar, it's a mandatory thing so we can all drool over your guitar and tell you how great it looks...! The Fralin pups are some of the best around, if you like a gritty or dirty sound, just play with your amp a bit because those pick ups will deliver what you want.
mark555 Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 oops, just re read your post, your epiphone is an elite, a very nice guitar indeed, not the cheaper stuff - post a picture of both guitars.
peteraltongreen Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Hi Red 535,Nice to know you've bought a great guitar early in life. There are great sounds in that style of guitar, you only have to listen to Larry Carlton,Lee Ritenor,Chuck Berry, and,or course, king of the bluesmen BB King.Jeff Beck & Mark Knopfler use a finger & thumb style,Wes Montgomery ( on an L5) only used his thumb. There's some fantastic sounds in there...Go find them ! Have fun with your new instrument. Look after it,and it'll look after you. Peter Alton Green
brentrocks Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Welcome to the HOC!!!! I just recently picked up a 535 myself....Congrats on your new purchase!
golferwave Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Welcome to the HOC! Sounds like you got yourself a real beauty there! Let's see some pictures and good luck on the search for your next Heritage. One always leads to another when it comes to Heritages.
big bob Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Welcome, there are plenty of way to turn a clean jazz sound gritty.. It is hard however to make a gritty sounding pup sound good clean.. try a fuzz face or a tube screamer. And
ronalr Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Welcome to the HOC...and congratulations on a great find...the 535 is an outstanding guitar
Doug Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 I bought my first Heritage (a 535) about a year ago and love it. I also play without a pick and through a Peavey Classic 30. I think with a little tweaking to your amp controls and set-up and you'll love the tones you are able to get from this combination. Welcome.
smurph1 Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Welcome to the Club..Great guys here!! You made a great choice with the 535 because they are so versatile..Name the style, that guitar can do it!!
FredZepp Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Welcome aboard... The 535 is a fantastic guitar..... so... let's see yours ! (Pics....please ) I am surprised that you haven't found the dirty tones in it yet.. but I predict that once that you find them, you will be amazed at how well it does it.
smurph1 Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Welcome to the HOC!!!! I just recently picked up a 535 myself....Congrats on your new purchase! Man that is sweet!! It just Screams TONE!! Sorry for the hijack..As you were..
red535 Posted May 30, 2010 Author Posted May 30, 2010 Sorry about the no pics. I know it is useless without them. The pic attachment process does not look that straight forward so I am going to try. If they come out wrong, maybe somebody can help. Looking at some of the other pics, especially SMURH1's, I notice I do not have a pick guard. SMURPH1's 535 also has what look to be extra switches by the pots. I have not really looked into all the options from the factory so any info is appreciated. This guitar replaces my Ibanez as-80 with Gibson '57 reissue pups. I plan to try some p-90's in the as-80. So that leads me into my next question. When does it start to be hoarding instead of collecting. This is my 12th guitar. Obviously this is a light-hearted question but I cant seem to give any of them up. Each one has a purpose even if they are just there to look at. As far as looking for that tone, I have not really tried as of yet as I have 13 month old twins that do not like to sleep and demand all of my free time. I am lucky to be able to post this much. I do see light at the end of the tunnel in terms of more time to play around, but it is not now. I have some effect pedals to fool around with. Also, I realize it is a lot easier to muddy up a signal that get a clean one. Thanks for all the replys, I did not expect as many.
peteraltongreen Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Hi Red535, That guitar looks just great.I have a Gibson 335 I bought in San Fran. in 1982,which,I think was the first year that Gibson 'got it back together'. Performance wise,it's spot on,even after nearly 30 years.I find that when I increase the volume of the amp, there's a sort of interaction with the guitar you can feel in the instrument, but it's totally controllable. It doesn't howl or buzz, just sounds great. I have to tell you that if I was buying a 335 type instrument now,it would be a Heritage.I just think they're stunning.A real credit to America. Peter Alton Green ( U.K. )
JeffB Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Hoarding v collecting? Depends on who you are talking to I know a few who are gear whores. Their stash of guitars changes regularly. Even their most coveted and favourite guitar is fair game in the acquisition of the next most awesome thing on the web forums and ebay A collector tends to only keep the best and only trade up. By my standards Im neither of the above. I just "have stuff". My wifes account would vary to mine. Great looking 535 by the way.
FredZepp Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 A red 535 is thing of classic beauty.... very nice thanks for the pics...
TalismanRich Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Welcome aboard! Love the look of the 535 in red (see pic to the left). I've used mine for all kinds of stuff, from Hendrix to Gerry and the Pacemakers to Van Morrison. They cover a LOT of ground. You should enjoy it!

chico Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Nice axe and welcome, you will love having it. I'm sure you will dial up the right tone. I have never owned a 535, the one I'd like to. but my problem is I own a Millie DC (see the avatar) and also a Millie H155 in TransRed like your 535. Love the color. Hope to get a 535 someday soon. maybe brent's as I have always had a soft spot for VSB on H535s. welcome and enjoy the git and the forum.
