It's a long way off, but I'm dreaming of my next Heritage..I think it will probably be a 535 or maybe a Prospect..The dilemma is the pickups..I love the Schallers in my 140, and REALLY love the Lollar P-90's in the H-137..HRW's come to mind, but I really don't like high output pickups..Maybe, just get one I can afford and upgrade to some PAF types, like the Tom Buckers that Brent bought..I dunno, it's a ways off, but I'm scheming already..Wonder if I can sell some plasma..LOL :this_thread_is_useless_without_

Hi, I just got a 170 with HRWs and I wouldn't call them high output. Hotter than the stock Schallers, yes, but not in EMG or even GBrand ceramic magnet territory.

PAF's have a VERY cool tone to them! I am winding up my first set up PAF's a week from today! I can't wait!

I have spent weeks now studying the what's what of pickups and how this does that and how what you did can affect things. What a balancing act in pickup making!

My goal with the PAF's is to wind up them to be somewhat like the 57-61 PAFs.

The trick is, with those older PAF's, they were so different physically from one another, trying to sound like one of these old PAF's... well... you might just sound like ONLY one of them. haha.

They resistance would be different... and not by a little... and even the magnet type would vary!

I will be a slow turning, wire feedin fool next weekend!

Can't wait to see what you get regardless of how long it takes you to get them!

Hi Smurph1,

I have a C140CM that came with Schaller pickups, and to be fair, they were o.k. I thought they were a bit brute force, and not enough tone for what I do,which is mostly 50's R'n R,60's & Jazzy stuff,at the moment. So,I replaced them with Seymour '59's.The difference for me was stunning. The guitar had tone, and it didn't overdrive the amp.I have a Guild Bluesbird with the same pickups on,that's how I knew the Heritage would sound good.On my H575,I've left the Schallers. They sound great on that.Hope this helps.

P.S. An afterthought.A fellow member friend of mine has a 555 and he changed the pickups on that,I think to the Duncan '59's.His member name is mark555.He'll be glad to help.

Which is funny, I play a lot of 50's era music such as Bill Haley and so on and i find I can hit the tone dead-nuts with the Schallers. Of course, I know it isn't the Schallers alone responsible for that tone. It starts with me, amp and the whole mess. I may just have the right combo of everything to make that happen.

Hey Papa, I vote Prospect ... with any pickup!! That's my vote. Mine has PhatCats and man are they Phat! I'd still like to try some Fralins or Lollars in it, tho'. Too many guitars, too many variables ... too little cash-ola. Argh!!

Hi,'barrymclark'

Lucky you.The gigs I get are stand ins, usually,so I give a rough (and I mean rough ) sound alike.I tried with one band to do the slapback, like Scotty & Cliff Gallup, but they didn't like it.They much prefered the smooth 'Shadows' echo type stuff. It's far too 'English' for me.I do a version of Carl Perkins 'Honey Don't' where I sneak in the slap, sequed to Everybody's Trying to be my Baby. The solo on Honey is a smooth Boogie type thing, but on Baby, I ape Scotty Moore & Chet Atkins fingerstyle thing. It might not be perfect, but it keeps the sounds of these guys alive ( Yes,I know,Scotty's still with us ) My other fav. is the early James Burton Tele stuff. When I first heard this on Ricky Nelson tracks,I'd no idea how he bent the strings so.It was late '50's,and the only strings available in th U.K. at that time were about gauge .012".I can do it now on .012's,but not then. I do have a wonderful '63 ( I think) Fender Deluxe in Choco covering amplifier. If you plug in a Jazzmaster, you get instant Ventures, with an L5,instant Wes Montgomery.

Tonight 30th May,my birthday,I'm going to see George Benson in Sheffield,U.K. I've loved George's playing since about 1964,and bought all his records.I missed him at the Berlin Jazz festival in 1967,but tonight's the night.I do have a distant association with George.Rod Temperton, who wrote Thriller for Michael Jackson is from this area of the U.K.I worked on the demo's for the Heatwave's 1st album ( In Fairview recording studio,Willerby,E.Yorks, engineering & tape jockeying ),remember Boogie Nights ? Rod wrote some tracks for George, including Family Reunion,on his new album.Biggest mistake of my career ? Not saying yes to the guitar chair when the then current guitarist,Clay, left Heatwave, just before they got big.If only....

I will be doing a write up of these sessions on my blog when I think them through & do a little research.

Very cool PAG! I only wish I had the time for gigging! Between the kids, work and, now, school coming up, I just don't have the time to invest.
