eljay Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 hello, any and all. i'm normally not a fan of heavy bling on guitars, but the split-block position markers have really got my number! i almost went with them on my incoming h530 but i chickened out at the last minute, partly for cost and partly on aesthetic grounds (e.g., "primordial growler like 530 don't need no fancy stuff") still, i like 'em a lot. you like? regards, eljay
brentrocks Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 i know where there is a H 150 custom with some nice split block inlays
Dick Seacup Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I think the hollow traps trip my trigger more than the split blocks. But, they're all good...even just the abalone dots!
tulk1 Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Not a big fan of the blocks, split or not. Traps for me. But of the two, I think I'd like split blocks better.
FredZepp Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I love both the splits and hollow traps..... really cool inlays. Or I am open to whatever ....
Kuz Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I love both the splits and hollow traps..... really cool inlays. Or I am open to whatever .... OK, it's official. The best looking fretboard markers are "Centurion inlays".... blocks, traps, split, diced, whatever...... Fred, how many times have I called DIBS on that Centurion of yours????!!!!!
Millennium Maestro Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I think the hollow traps trip my trigger more than the split blocks. I love...the hollow traps, a close second is the split blocks on a large headstocked heritage!! I also really like abalone. my least... aged fake pearl of a gibson! I THINK DOTS BELONG ON A STRAT!!

peteraltongreen Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Hi Eljay, I think multi binding & pearl or Abalone fingerboard markers look great.A real show stopper. However,I have an L5 Jazzer with a great ebony fingerboard, which is blathered in mother of pearl. So,I'm mostly playing a non wooded surface. Also, the multi binding on the neck, with it's castelations at the fret ends make it difficult to re fret ( additional cost applies ),if the binding splits,as it can when the frets are lifted,it's difficult to repair to any degree of satisfaction. The fret markers I like the best are the thumbnails used by Gretsch. They take up less of the playing surface, and look classy. Peter Alton Green ( U.K.)
GuitArtMan Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Nothing says class to my like plain old simple trapezoid inlays. They are by far my favorite inlay.
yoslate Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Can't imagine anything other than split blocks on my Super! They seem so Fifties-jazz-box-late-night-9th-chord to me....
golferwave Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 On certain guitars the split blocks look very elegant. For my guitars I'll take the trapezoid inlays.
tulk1 Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 OK, it's official. The best looking fretboard markers are "Centurion inlays".... blocks, traps, split, diced, whatever...... Don't really care for the abalone (or whatever that is) inlays. Too much ... movement, maybe?
111518 Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 When I decided to sell my Super 400 and looked for a replacement, one of the things I liked about the 550 was the split blocks. When I went looking for an archtop with a floater, I found an Eagle Classic that was in most ways very simply appointed ... but it had those split blocks, and I couldn't spit that hook. For me, split blocks have that great Art Deco feel, and also the "top of the line" (and nostalgic) association with the Super 400.
FredZepp Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Thanks Kuz... the abalone inlays are seriously 3D and trippy in person, a bit of bling. The inlays help establish the "personality" of the instrument, and I love a variety. My 140 looks best with just dots, I think. I do love the split blocks on a nice hollowbody, it's a bit of the heritage ...

FredZepp Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I'll give you a shiny new quarter for that Centurion? I'm still on my honeymoon stage with it... everytime I get it out, it just takes my breath away . Put that quarter in the bank ,where it can earn some interest .... I am looking for a pic of hollow traps... anybody got one? Those are nice and rare with a fantastic custom look. You don't see them often. ... And hey big bob , I just noticed that there are no pics of the Psycho Popsicle in the gallery, what gives? ( slight hijack )
brentrocks Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I'm not a big fan of dots...they are just too................................................Fender. I love traps, i love blocks.....i think the 535 w/ blocks is one of the sexiest combos ever.
big bob Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I kinda like em Nude, sans blocks, traps and dots, just plane nada.
Hfan Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 my least... aged fake pearl of a gibson! I saw a Les Paul at a luthier's shop and it had the ugliest yellow traps, I guess they get that way when they age, I had no idea they where using plastic. The luthier called them "mother of rubber maid". He had replaced a few for some reason, the new bright ones really looked bad with the older yellow ones. Myself, I don't care as long as the neck plays well and they are not plastic.
brentrocks Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I kinda like em Nude, sans blocks, traps and dots, just plane nada. i thought you would show yours off?
Patrick Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 I'm a fan of split blocks . . . especially on arch tops. I saw Gregg DeLorto's split block fingerboard on his Golden Eagle. It sold me! I ordered one to be custome built for me. I'll be at the factory next week to look through the wood packages with Marv. I asked him to do the neck shaping himself. He gladly agreed. I'm going with a 3.25" body depth, 17.25" lower bout width and 20-7/8" body length. Single mounted Duncan Antiquity. At this point, our only challenge is gonna be the tailpiece. I really don't care for the finger type tail piece and I don't want an ebony violin type. It make the guitar look too "beautique builder" type. I'm hoping that Marv can find one of the older, original style with the ebony insert. I plan on picking it up in person in August at PSPIII. Hope it's done by then.
