I have had the pleasure of catching Mimi Fox live twice in two weeks’ time: once at Bananas At Large in San Rafael CA with Gregg De Lortto, the California Heritage rep, in a very intimate setting. Man, can that lady play!! I learned more about “unnatural” harmonics that night than I ever knew existed! Gregg is no slouch, either. Mimi used a Fender Twin-Reverb with her 575, while Gregg used an Eagle and a 535 through a Pro-Reverb, I think.

Tuesday, June 15th, Mimi had her DVD unveiling at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland, playing with a trio. The DVD is way cool, but the live performance was one to remember for a long time. She was playing a 575 through a JC-120, and it sounded just great. The bass player had an Acoustic Image Coda II, and that little box really filled the club. And clean? You bet!!

You can see and hear some of the DVD segments (loved Blues for Two) at:

Check it out.

That's so awesome that you got to see her twice!

I'm a big fan of Mimi's playing. Hearing her play her 575 is what sold me on purchasing a 575 in the first place!

I received her new DVD last week and have already watched it several times. I was impressed with the production value as well as the strong performances. Very well done. :P

Been reading about her for a while! The link gave me my first shot at actually hearing and watching her.... Mimi is a Bad Agent!! Interesting, subtle and innovative take on harmony. Wonderful chops; and she has The Tone! Thanks for the link, je!

I have several of her CDs. I really like her ensamble stuff better than her solo stuff (but that is just my preference) she is an incredible solo performer as well.

My Jazz teacher thinks she is as good as anyone out there now (and he would know!)

Thanks for the review, JE.

I'm really bummed that I couldn't make her performances, but the DVD will be ordered. Mimi is the real deal.

I've been listening to her a lot lately as well . . . there aren't many female jazz guitarists out there. She brings something different to her music. Groove-heavy, harmonically interesting, KILLER tone, mad chops . . . really one of my favorite players to listen to. My non-musician wife doesn't dig some of the music I listen to because some of it is "music for musicians", ya know? But honestly, true musicianship is creating something aesthetically beautiful that you don't have to WORK to listen to. I can dig "music for musicians" because I is one. ;) But Ms Fox makes music in the tradition of the greats: there's enough esoteric musicality that musicians have something to dig on, but there's MELODY and GROOVE and TONE--aesthetic value to anybody with ears!

So, she played through a Twin? :P Sweet . . . a 575 through a Twin is THE STUFF, baby! Gotta go get that red light shining right now . . .

I found out that Mimi used a Twin Reverb on the DVD - DK which mic but I will assume a Sure SM-57

Mimi's Perpetually Hip and Standards are my current favorites - I'm not playing much else.

Her jazz instruction book 'Graduated Soloing' is very good, and fits well with the Joe Pass' Guitar method. Probably because they played together and Mimi studied under Joe I guess.

I'm looking forward to getting into her 'Jazz Anatomy' and 'Graduated Solos' CD/DVDs sometime soon.

That kind of talent and dedication to art is humbling.

Wow. Catch and release is definitely the way to go with musicians I think. Crazy that you caught her twice. I once caught the same fish twice. It took the hook deep the first time and we had to cut the line and leave the hook in to get him back in the water. The second time, we were laughing about it being the same stupid fish, given it was about the same size and all. Sure enough, it had the hook in deep from the last time. I suppose it's much easier to tell you've caught Mimi Fox twice than to tell you've caught the same fish twice, though.

OK, silliness aside, Mimi Fox is one talented musician. I didn't know she had any instructional material out; I'll have to check around for a copy.
