Dots, blocks or plain!

Hi all,

I'm about to "bite the bullet" on a 575, and as JP says, I'm still over thinking it, but...

I'd like to see opinions about fret board inlays.

To me, dots are classic, block is elegant and there is something kinda sensual about plain ebony.

Opinions please.

split blocks, ftw!

Depends on the guitar....

single pup 575 or Sweet16---no markers

2-pup 575----blocks or split blocks

Maybe this will help..here is my former 575 custom with blocks

and an Eastman without. The single pickup looks classic with none but

the double pickup has that great es-175 vibe.

Trapazoids or Blocks are a must on custom 575s!!!

If your 575 is a standard without a bound headstock or MOP "the Heritage" dots. Since you are going Ebony, even sans dots with a single pickup.

Going deluxe / bound neck and headstock... blocks, traps or split blocks depends on the color, contracting trim (scratch guard) and tailpiece.

Trapezoids are the only inlay for me. They are simple, elegant, classy all in one. I never cared for blocks or split blocks.

My vote is for dots...more wood, simpler look, I find it easier to play...but to each their own!

I see you are also leaning towards Ebony for your fretboard. Plain Ebony is really sexy, but it needs to match the rest of the instrument's asthetics. Same applies to the type of inlays. The inlays should not take away from or appear to be a mis-match on a guitar.

Your Eastman is a perfect example of what a non-inlayed fretboard can to for an instrument. CLASSY!!

I've seen split blocks (my personal favorite) on some gits that just does not work on a particular guitar. They can come off as over the top gawdy if not in line with the other features. Conversely, on something like a Sweet 16, they look like a perfect fit...to my eye.

Let us know what other features you are planning for your special H575. Maybe we can give you better guidance.

I've gone minimal in the way I look at guitars. Unless it is needed and makes the guitar better, I don't want it. Blocks look nice, can be gaudy, but I don't like the feel of seashell under my fingers, and they serve no purpose. I'd rather small dots. I'd like to go plain fretboard, but I do use the dots, so I gotta have them.

Same goes more multi ply binding, bound fretboards, gold, etc. Just my opinion.....

I'd be happy with either dots or block inlays. I can't do without inlays though or I'll get lost on the fret board lol.

I'd definitely go with a bound headstock and the MOP 'Heritage' inlay if given the chance. Very classy!

Hi Gitfiddler,

I love 'em all, just can't afford 'em all... yet!

If I can figure out how to post it, I'll put up a pic of what I'm thinking. I found this one on Google Images and, instant lust!

Cheers, Ron

Ron, that is a beauty.

I think that one is owned by an HOC memeber.

Also it appears that the image is reversed and not a lefty guitar. Take a close look at the headstock. "The Heritage" is backwards. ;)

Ron, Pretty funny, when I had my 575 built, I told Heritage I'd be happy if it looked just like that same photo!

Here's what they came up with (gold since removed, Tailpiece being replaced with a Bigsby)

Oops! Forgot to mention, I'm a lefty and I flipped the pic! ;)

I agree. They dress up anything, but not too much. Kind of like wearing a great dress shirt at a gig with Levis.

Naked.

Gutter mind! We're talking fretboards and inlays. Keep it clean. ;)

I'm a traps fan, myself. But not sure that's the ticket for this guitar. The dots actually look very classy. Not plain blocks, tho'. Never did like those. Splits would be cool. Or maybe no inlays at all. There you go, choose from these 4 options. .....................
