I like the looks of them but I don't understand how they affect intonation.

I've mentioned in other thread that I'm a fan of this beautiful and yes, functional tailpiece. It has an effect on string tension as the individual 'fingers' are tightened or loosened. I don't think it has much of an impact on tone, but with instruments, each component adds or detracts something.

 

The Heritage Johnny Smith offered a black version of this tailpiece. I haven't seen any aftermarket ones, but I'm sure they are out there.

It has an effect on total string length, specifically that section beyond the nut to bridge portion. It doesn't affect scale (of course), so I don't get the point. I wouldn't know how to adjust the fingers.

Adjusting the fingers up and down changes the break angle of the string over the bridge, and this has an impact on the tension. Some archtops allowed adjustment of the entire bridge up and down --my Super 400 did, for example, and I think the L-5 has a similar adjustment. The finger tailpiece is specifically designed to allow you to balance the strings.
