Well I traded my antique natural 150 for the amber 535 that Ryan posted in the for sale section. It's a nice one. The neck has a larger profile than the 150 and feels more comfortable to me. I've been prefering larger, beefier necks lately. The 535 is an '89 and is in real nice condition for a 21 year old guitar. I'm surprised by the tone of coil tapped Schallers in this one and really like it in the "single coil" mode. The tone pots are push/pull switches and tap is engaged in the "down" position. It's in humbucker mode when pulling them up. The guitar has a Tonepros stoptail and bridge. Ryan has D'Addario .011's on it and they feel like .010's. I'm going to keep them until a string change is needed and then try .010's. Maybe it's the larger neck or the neck angle but it's very comfortable to play. Here's a couple of pics in my new sunroom.

That's a very nice 535. Schallers are greatpups. You may want to consider having a bound ebony Johnny Smith pick guard made for it. It looks just great as it is, but a quick pick guard change . . every 5 or 6 months . . . back and forth, would give you a unique look, and possible a different approach when playing. That's what happens with me. I do it on several of my Heritages and on one of my arch tops.

Great guitar!! Enjoy it.

The amber on that looks great... and I tend to like guitars with a few years on them.

And the wiring is interesting... that would tend to make you use the single coil mode more often. Cool.

I could enjoy that 535 , for sure. and I'm sure that you'll enjoy it immensely .

Nice trade! The boys' Amber Finish on all that maple is stunning! Really makes the flame jump. <_< And I can attest that the split Schallers (albeit mine are HRWs) work quite well in the 535/555 model.

Enjoy your new 535!! It's nice!! I can say though that the 150 is a real stunner also. Ryan will certainly have pride of ownership in his new guitar as well.

Mike,

Glad it is a good one. I know you were looking to the one that you sold year ago.

Love the color too!!!

So that's your secret, Patrick.

That is one sweet looking 535 you got there. The background ain't too shabby either.

What made you consider switching from a 150 to 535?

Thanks to all.

Git,

I have gravitated towords bigger necks since getting my R8. It seems I can play passages with more authority get a better vibrato going with the bigger neck. The 150 wasn't getting the playing time and I felt the need to revisit a 535. As Kuz mentioned I had sold one years ago (1997?) and it blew away any ES335 I ever played. It was tobacco sunburst and even looked like an old Gibby finish. The neck on this one is larger than I remember it being my previous one, and I like it. I thought the 150 had a '59 neck profile but after holding this neck I believe the 150 was between a '59 and '60 and this neck is more of a '59. I hope Ryan is as happy with the antique natural 150.

Slider, I understand perfectly. In fact, I recently sold off a few of my choice old gits due to my need for thicker neck profiles. My 535 Goldtop has a fat neck that is very hard to put down. If you have large hands it makes playing so much more comfortable over time. I was wondering if you had changed from the 150 to 535 also for the tonal differences between the two makes. Either way, the more comfort we feel in a guitar, the more we'll play it. That's the bottom line. Good choice.

Nice guitar, pleased for you. A good semi is a terrific guitar.

Well, the tonal differences also played a part as I believe my R8 has the "solidbody singlecut" tone covered and it also has a BIG neck. I must have gotten a good one. :-)

And, thanks Mark.

Very nice guitar, Mike, and makes sense to diversify, if you've got the LP thing well-covered. I like beefy necks, at least up to a limit, even though my hands are small. Just adds more rigidity and control to the whole operation, or at least so it seems to me.

Thanks Larry. Yeah, the R8 is about as big as I would like a neck to be. The R7's are a bit too chunky.

Brent, yes it is and if you find yourself in this neck of the woods, stop by for a swim. ;)

Here's a better shot...

Thanks Scott. The pickguard is actually wood and matches the guitar. I am considering a Gibby style black guard for it.

Sweet. I'm starting to GAS for a 535 again...

Of all the guitars I have, I love my 535 the most. If I could only have One guitar, it would have to be a 535. My 535 compares to nothing else that I have. It is one special guitar. A big shout out to all of the 535 owners out there, you know what I mean.
